Reaction to Tiger's Press Conference

Posted Yesterday:
He’s going to apologize to his family, fans, sponsors, and the PGA for his “transgressions.” He’ll probably use the word infidelity a few times. He’s going to say that he’s getting help and trying to fix his life. He will make it clear that it is a private matter between him and his family, and he will politely ask everyone to stay out of his business (but we won’t listen). Then he will say that he is returning to the game of golf, probably for a tournament or two right before the Masters. He will finish up by not taking questions.

Pretty much hit the nail right on the head. Only part I messed up was Tiger announcing his return to golf. He didn’t announce a timetable, although he said he’s not ruling out a return this year. Come on now. I don’t think there’s anyone out there who believes he won’t be back sometime this season.

He seemed sincere in his apology, despite the lack of tears. (Can you picture Tiger Woods crying? I can’t.) All indications are that he wrote the speech himself, and from listening to it, that does seem to be the case. He deserves credit for that, although he did have a solid blueprint to follow from past delinquents (see Kobe, A-Rod, Mark McGwire, Marion Jones, etc.)

Tiger dispelled the notion that Elin clubbed his ass with a nine-iron, which takes some of the fun and imagination out of the story. (Editor’s Note: Domestic violence is no joke. Just ask Rihanna). He also angrily told the paparazzi to leave him and his family alone. Good luck with that one. Cue Wale: “I wouldn’t wish fame on my enemy. Paparazzi like a life time sentencing.”

Overall, I thought Tiger’s apology was genuine and heartfelt, though predictable. (Except for the Buddha reference. Didn’t see that one coming). Hopefully, we’ll all get the privilege to see him out on the golf course sometime soon.
