3 Things That Baffled Me (4/27)

3 things that blew my mind from the past week:

Patriots Draft Strategy – “The Patriots have traded the 22nd pick in the 2010 NFL Draft to the Denver Broncos.” The least shocking words of the entire Draft weekend. All the Pats do is trade down. I know it’s too early to fully evaluate the Draft, but for the love of God, just fucking pick someone already. The Patriots are going to regret not taking Dez Bryant, I guarantee it.

The Pats keep accumulating more and more 2nd and 3rd round picks, which I wouldn’t have a problem with if, you know, we used them to pick guys who were actually good at football! The jury remains out on last year’s class, but the Patriots haven’t drafted an impact player in the 2nd or 3rd round since 2002! Seriously, look it up.

With all that being said, by most accounts, the Patriots actually had a good draft. It’s just frustrating as all hell to watch. It takes a lot of patience to be a Pats fan. So now that I’ve vented my frustration and calmed down a little bit: In Belichick we trust.

All the fuss about Tim Tebow – Has one player’s draft status ever been so scrutinized in the history of the NFL Draft? I mean, if you’ve watched ESPN at all over the past few months, you’re probably an expert on Tim Tebow’s throwing motion, leadership skills, versatility, and even his virginity for Christ’s sake. (Apologies for using the Lord’s name in vain, Tim). There are 7 rounds in the NFL Draft, but it felt like Tebow got at least 80 percent of the coverage this weekend. The biggest reason why so many people hate him is because the sports media shoves him down our throats.

Tebow ended up going in the first round to the Denver Broncos at pick number 25. Many people have been killing the Broncos for picking him so high, and maybe rightly so, but who really knows for sure right now? That’s the beauty of the NFL draft; you never know where star players are going to come from (See: Tom Brady, round 6). I’m as sick of hearing about Tebow as the next guy, but let’s see what the kid can do before writing this off as a dumb pick.

MTV Hills Marathon – The term “Reality TV” in and of itself blows my mind, but that’s another story. If you flipped on MTV this weekend, all you saw was The Hills. For hours and hours on end. I’d rather run the entire Boston Marathon barefoot over broken glass than subject myself to the torture of a Hills marathon. How can anybody sit there and watch that fake life shit?

Patriots Cut Adalius Thomas

Linebacker Adalius Thomas was released by the Patriots on Monday, according to an NFL source, ending a three-year tenure that started with promise and concluded with Thomas publicly sparring with the club.

Thomas was the highest-priced free-agent acquisition in team history, signing a five-year, $35 million contract in 2007, but he turned out to be one of the biggest personnel missteps in Bill Belichick's 11-year tenure.

Thomas had issues with his role, expecting to be used as more of a pure pass rusher, while the Patriots were disappointed with Thomas' production and presence in the locker room.

Lock of the Century #1: Patriots release Adalius Thomas.

Lock of the Century #2: Adalius Thomas signs with Jets.

Let’s just be honest here. We all know it’s going to happen. Thomas will sign with the Jets to spite Bill Belichick and the Patriots. It also makes sense because that fat slob Rex Ryan was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore, back when Adalius Thomas was a stud. I’m sure Thomas believes that Ryan will utilize him the way he thinks he should be used. This potential inevitable move fits right in line with the Jets' strategy this offseason of scooping up every big name player they possibly can.

So, to recap: Pats release Thomas. Thomas will sign with the Jets. Thomas will be nasty again. Lock it down.

Dear Patriots, you do know it's the off-season?

The Miami Dolphins have agreed to send a 2010 and 2011 2nd round pick to the Denver Broncos to acquire WR Brandon Marshall. It's the second big move in two days by an AFC East team looking to dethrone the New England Patriots as best team in the AFC East. Yesterday, the New York Jets acquired former Super Bowl MVP, WR Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2010 5th rounder pick.

Great move by the Miami Dolphins. Although they still lack a deep threat the Dolphins acquired one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. Hands down. Aside from Wes Welker, Marshall is the only active WR to record three straight 100+ reception seasons.

Okay, so yet again New England wakes up to absolute horrible news. After last night's NHL Draft Lottery and the Bruins solidifying their chances at Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin we wake and get this. Great. Fucking great. Like seriously, what the hell is going on the Foxboro? It seems that every move made in the NFL off-season is a move the New England Patriots should have, but didn't or failed to make.

The Jets and Dolphins have been very active in the off-season acquiring positions of need when the New England Patriots have been sitting there resigning their own players that got them to 10-6 like a bunch of clowns. The AFC East is going to be an absolute bloodbath next year and by the looks of it I think the New England Patriots are going to come out of it bruised, battered, bloody and very very disappointed with the results. Unless the get their act together....and fast.

Just like we said yesterday after the Jets acquired Santonio Holmes, lets hope Bill Belichick and company have something planned for the NFL draft next week because right now they need a lot of help. Not only do they need a WR to replace Wes Welker, a pass rushing LB or defensive end to get to the quarterback, a tough physical running back for the red zone, but corner back now becomes a serious need no matter how you slice it if we're going to be facing Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, and Brandon Marshall 4x a year this year.

Anyone else want to see the Patriots go get Terrell Owens to pair opposite Randy Moss for a year? I mean, it couldn't hurt.

We've now had an off-season where we could have acquired: Anquan Boldin, Brandon Marshall, Santonio Holmes, LaDanian Tomlinson, Antonio Cromartie, Willie Parker, Larry Johnson, and many more talented players, but have settled to resign current players and bring in an overweight, past his prime Alge Crumpler for blocking purposes. Awesome.

So here's a message to Foxboro, In Bill we don't trust anymore. Do something. Show us you care. Make a move. I don't care what it is, but christ DO SOMETHING before it's too late and nothing is available for them to do.

Jets acquire Santonio Holmes; Pats do nothing.

NY POST: The Jets landed former Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes on the cheap last night, acquiring the troubled wideout from the Steelers for the fire-sale price of a fifth-round pick in this month's NFL Draft.

Holmes, who turned 26 in March, is one of the league's most explosive receivers but he also is one of its most controversial and might not be available to the Jets to start the upcoming season.

Okay so here's the deal. I hate the Jets. I despise the Jets. I think they are the most pathetic organization in all of football. I hate their owner. I hate their players. I hate their coach. Everything about them, I hate. Needless to say, it's time to hand it to them. Yes, they take risks on players. Yes they sign guys who are controversial, criminals, and loud mouths. The fact of the matter, however, these guys can flat out play. A fifth round pick for Santonio Holmes? Are you kidding me. What the fuck.

The Jets now have an explosive receiving core that includes: Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes, Jerricho Cotchery, Dustin Keller, and Ladanian Tomlinson to throw passes to next year.

The Patriots? They got Randy Moss, Kevin Faulk, and not much more after that, unless you consider David Patten, Julian Edelmen, or half the season of Wes Welker on one leg as explosive.

Like, seriously. What the fuck are the Patriots doing. You can't honestly tell me that they couldn't top that trade offer, especially when you take into consideration the NEED they have at WR. I used to firmly believe in Bill Belichick. I always trusted him with every move, but right now I just don't know. I don't know what he is thinking. It's time to face the facts Bill, we won 10 games last year. Barely.

We were not the New England Patriots of the earlier part of the decade, but I'll tell you one thing. It's time to get back to that point. So as of right now, F2DD is 50/50 on the Patriots this year. Let's hope they kill the draft or all of New England is in for a very, very, very long season.
