Ingram’s Father Gets Extra Jail Time for Jumping Bail to Watch His Son Play

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. - Mark Ingram Sr., a star NFL player in the 1990s and the father of Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram Jr., was sentenced Monday to more than two additional years in federal prison for jumping bail in an attempt to see his son play in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

Ingram Sr. failed to surrender in December 2008 to begin serving a prison term of seven years and eight months after pleading guilty to money laundering and bank fraud. He'll now have to spend nearly 10 years behind bars.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Platt on Long Island was nearly apologetic in imposing the additional 27 months but noted that Ingram, 44, has had a long criminal history since retiring from the NFL. Read the rest of the article here.

There you have it. Genuine fatherly devotion mixed with a little bit of pure stupidity, leads to an extra 27 months in prison. Hardly seems worth it, especially since Ingram Sr. was caught just hours before his son took the field in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. Makes me wonder if my dad would ever jump bail to watch me play. Then again, I’m not a Heisman Trophy winning running back, and my dad is not a money laundering felon, so I guess it’s a mute point.

Maybe Ingram Sr. was just trying to be a good father, (in which case he probably should have thought about that before getting thrown in jail for money laundering and bank fraud). Or maybe he watches The Wire and shares Avon Barksdale’s theory about prison: “You only serve 2 days. The day you go in, and the day you get out.” In which case, what’s 27 more months? Regardless of his reasoning, he won’t be watching his son play football for a very long time, and judging by the average career length of an NFL running back, he might never get the chance again.

Comitting the crime originally was stupid . He made millions during his pro career. More than the average person make in their lifetime. These athletes and entertainers are so greedy. Living above their means. They take it for granted. During the off seasons and after retirement , they need to go to school and learn a subject or get a degree. Knowledge is infinite. I wish I had the resources they have.
