Bobby Orr Statue Unveiled, Mumbles Menino At It Again

40 years ago today, Bobby Orr proved that men could fly. Orr flying though the air after scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal against the St. Louis Blues back in 1970 is one of the coolest sports images of all time. The Bruins and the city of Boston unveiled a statue depicting "The Goal" today outside the Garden. Easily one of the greatest moments in Boston sports history, Bobby Orr's statue was long overdue. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who spoke at the ceremony, certainly understands Orr's place in history:

“Boston has an amazing set of remarkable athletes whose actions in the moment have become ionic (iconic?) in sports. Havlicek stole the ball. Fisk waved the ball fair. Flutie launched the Hail Mary pass. Varitek split the uprights. Today we honor one of the most brilliant moments: Bobby Orr flying through the air. Who could forget that play against St. Louis as the Bruins beat the Blues to bring a Stanley Cup to Boston.”

Varitek split the uprights? Varitek? Look out, Mumbles Menino is at it again. (Unless of course, by uprights, he meant Alex Rodriguez's face). Some might say that this is the perfect example of why politicians should really just stay out of the way when it comes to sports. But to me, this is just another example of Mumbles Menino being a clown.
